Panelists on the Fox News program “Outnumbered” took turns taking swipes at Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York who has risen to prominence within the party over the past year.
Most members of the panel viewed Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest member of Congress, as a burden on Democrats running for president, arguing that her endorsement would not be as influential as some people believe it might be.
Juan Williams, who was a guest on the panel, disagreed, arguing that her popularity on social media, as well as with younger voters, was a net positive, Business Insider reported.
But Dagen McDowell, a Fox News contributor who was also on the panel, seemed to be taking the hardest shots against Ocasio-Cortez.
“She’s a socialist from New York City. She photographs well and she speaks with her hands, but beyond that does she matter?” McDowell asked.
The panelists went on to say that some of the policies she endorses, including the Green New Deal, would hurt Americans, especially when it came to jobs for coal miners and others in that industry.
With or without the Green New Deal, however, coal has been dwindling and renewable energy has been increasing, according to reporting from Forbes. Other studies demonstrate that investment in renewable energy and other green industries creates more jobs — and while some industries may be hurt by such a transition, the overall result is a net creation of new employment opportunities, reported Pacific Standard magazine.
McDowell concluded the segment not by focusing on Ocasio-Cortez’s policy positions, but by seemingly focusing on the Congresswoman’s attractiveness.
“Beauty fades, stupid is forever,” McDowell said to Williams. She provided assurances to Williams that she wasn’t talking about him, implying that her comments were directed toward Ocasio-Cortez.
